Chennai airport Bravo taxiway is making sensational news now!!

Posted on: 14/Jul/2022 10:13:08 AM
What started in the year 2018 has finally come to an end now in 2022!!

Yes!! We are now talking about the reopening of Bravo taxiway at the Chennai airport after 4 long years. The superb piece of information is that once this Bravo taxiway opens on 14th July 2022 then there would be more flights, reduced delays and less traffic congestion at the Chennai airport.  It is noteworthy that Bravo the primary taxiway runs parallel to the main runway. Main runway is used for 90% of domestic, international and cargo movements.

There was a curve near the Guindy end in the Bravo and it had to be straightened. It must be noted that due to this curve the flights that travel from the terminal to main runway took more time in addition to consuming more fuel. It was in 2018 AAI or Airport Authority of India began the curve straightening work at the Chennai airport and after many delays the taxiway is now ready.

From Thursday onwards the Bravo taxiway would be opened for the public. The airside congestion would reduce now as the curve has been straightened and this would reduce the peak hour aircraft delays. Airside capacity would be increased as taxiways would be opened now. This was according to some officers belonging to AAI. On the main runway, more number of aircrafts would be handled per hour hereafter.

Currently the number of aircrafts handled per hour is 36 and it would reach 45 to 50 when the construction of 2 rapid exit taxiways gets completed and opened for the public. As per an AAI official, at present there are close to 180 to 200 aircraft movements per day and managing the air traffic would be tough if the aircraft movement increases.

The curve straightening work done on the Bravo taxiway has increased the minimum distance of separation between Alpha taxiway and the centre line of the main runway from 123m to 172.5m now. Point is that the restrictions that were there for using the Alpha taxiway (when the runway 25 was in use) would not be there hereafter.
