An accident was averted at the Tuticorin airport on Sunday, as a Spice Jet airline�s rear landing gear did not open as the flight descended.
�It was fortunate that there was no damage to the aircraft. All the passengers were immediately evacuated from the aircraft and taken to safety� The flight landed faster than the normal speed and suffered minor damage in the tail portion.
�The Spicejet flight landed at the airport around 8.40am. With the landing gear failing, the aircraft`s tail hit the tarmac. The stricken aircraft dragged along the runway for some distance before coming to a halt. The jet had to be towed to the hanger. The flight did not suffer any major damage and that the 46 passengers on board the aircraft were safe.
�It was a minor accident and the rear part of the aircraft suffered some damage in the impact. The airport authorities have told us that it would be set right soon�, said sources.
