Under the public- private partnership, GCC would build modern toilet lounges across various places in Chennai. The estimated cost would be Rs 221 crores. It was later mentioned by Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai Corporation commissioner that GCC has called for national bids for design, build, operate and transfer of toilet lounges for a period of 8 years. This would be carried out under Swachh Bharat Mission2 .0 with public-private partnership.
New constructions would be carried out and apart from that there would also be retrofitting and remodelling of existing public toilets. It is now revealed that the private agencies would come out with their own modern innovative design so that the facilities would be world class. There would be kiosks and space for vending. North Chennai localities would be taken up in the first phase.
It is learnt that in the Royapuram zone142 toilets would be constructed. There would also be renovation of 26 major toilets and 89 minor ones here. In 27 locations, new toilet lounges would be built by GCC.
For the purpose of building toilet lounges in Thiru VI Ka Nagar, 99 locations were identified by the civic body. At 11 locations in Teynampet zone, there would be toilet lounges. In Chennai, as many as 2624 seats would be developed.
It must be noted that the contractor would be allowed to earn money by means of advertisements, commercial retail spaces for legally approved products etc. The Chennai residents would get free services and to examine the revenue streams GCC would form a committee.
