In the future, if you witness more greenery along the Adyar banks between Airport and Nandambakkam, then dont be surprised!!
The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is planning to develop an eco-park along the banks of Adyar River between Airport and Nandambakkam and along the banks of Cooum near the famous Island Grounds. Before the onset of the monsoon in 2022, a 4km long eco-park along the Adyar River from the airport to Nandambakkam would be created by Chennai Corporation.
There would soon be planting of more trees along the Adyar River. This was according to Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai Corporation commissioner. He revealed that indigenous trees would be making their presence felt and the residents would be allowed to go to the eco-park. In another 2 weeks work regarding the eco-park would begin. This was mentioned by deputy commissioner, education, D. Sneha.
She shed light on how flowering plants would be planted along Cooum near the Island Grounds. Various species of trees that would be planted are peepal, arjun, Portia and golden shower trees. Trees of various species would be making their presence felt along the edges, slop and bund of the waterway. Near Kotturpuram MRTS, work has already started regarding planting of saplings. It is sensational to note that more than 60000 saplings would be planted this month. In June, the greening of playgrounds along the Adyar would also be launched.
The development of elevated corridors along the waterway has been responsible for why the proposed stretch of greening along the Cooum has been stopped.
