Whats the latest regarding the widening of 4 lane GST Road between Chennai and Trichy?

To facilitate the proposed construction of elevated corridor between Tambaram and Chengalpet, widening of 4lane GST Road between Tambaram and Trichy was necessitated.

The news that has come out now is that around 25% of the 8 lanes of the GST Roads 13.5km stretch between Guduvanchery and Chettipuniyam (Mahindra City) has been completed. This was brought out by some sources belonging to the NH wing of state government. It is known that the widening work started in the month of November in 2021.

It is true that if the road was not widened then the elevated corridor work would make it narrow. This was mentioned by an official belonging to NHAI. The road handles more than 1lakh vehicles per day and it was necessary to widen the road before concentrating on the elevated road project. The carriageways of both sides of GST Road between Tambaram and Chengalpet have been divided by meridians of about 2.5m to 5m and the road width is 35m to 45m.

A passage space for about 10000 vehicles per day would be created by laying 2 more lanes on either side. This would in turn reduce the traffic congestion when the speeds of the vehicles drop to 23kmph to 30kmph at the entry points of GST.  An amount of Rs 275.17 crores has been transferred by NHAI to the NH wing of the government for widening of GST Road from Vandalur to Chennaipunniyam.

By reducing the meridian width and merging main carriageway with service lane at many places, the 5.3 km Vandalur- Guduvanchery section of GST Road was widened into 6 or 8lanes in the first phase.

In as many as 3 stages, the widening of the 13.5km stretch between Guduvancheri Chennipunniyam would be taken up. This was as per some official sources. The 3 stages would be Guduvanchery- Maraimalai Nagar, Maraimalai Nagar-Singaperumal Koil and Singaperumal Koil- Chennipunniyam

It must be noted that the 3km section between Guduvancheri and Kattankulathur has been widened into 6 lane road and works to build SWD is going on. NHAI has proposed to widen the Thiruporur- Chengalpet 2lane into 4 lanes. This was as per a NHAI official.
