Velachery bus stand is grabbing many eyeballs now!!

Lack of basic amenities like chairs, public toilets and shelters at the important Velachery Vijayanagar bus terminus has been a cause for concern!!

At the Velachery bus terminus in Chennai, the commuters are finding it very difficult due to the above said reasons and this has been continuing on for many years now. In addition to these issues, the MTC buses stop on the carriageway of the road and the passengers would have to wait in the heat to get into the buses here.

More than 10 years back, MTC had proposed to shift the bus terminus near Velachery metro station but till now this has not been done here.

In January 2018, a portion of bus shelter was demolished to make way for one of the arms of the flyover from Taramani Link Road to Velachery Bypass at Vijayanagar junction. The commutes have been standing on the road here as the bus terminus has become cramped. This was as per a resident belonging to Velachery.

It must be noted that the bus terminus does not have a proper name and sign board etc. In the peak hours, the bus terminus witnesses heavy traffic congestion because buses from Velachery bypass road, Taramani Link Road and Tambaram-Velachery Road have to go through a narrow space to stop at the bus terminus. Once the second arm of the flyover from Velachery Bypass towards Tambaram gets ready, the traffic congestion would be reduced.

Many people travel to southern suburbs like Tambaram, Madipakkam, Medavakkam, Kelambakkam, Chromepet, Sholinganallur, Perungudi etc from this Velachery bus terminus is a known fact. There are also direct MTC buses from here to other important places like Central, Broadway, Ambattur and Avadi etc. Information collected is that as on March 2019, Velachery Vijayanagar bus terminus handled more than 60000 commuters in a day.
