Yesterday, 22nd April 2022, on the occasion of World Earth Day, nearly 50 school students belonging to government school in Mylapore became cynosure of many eyes. These students had set up a kitchen garden that would be superb for the noon meal scheme at the school. The need to save soil from getting extinct was also given importance yesterday by a NGO.

Inside the government school campus in Mylapore in Chennai, around 50 students planted vegetables and fruit saplings. It is now said that the produce from these would be used for the noon meal scheme at this school. For this, popular organisation Sundaram Finance and city based NGO Bhumi joined hands together.

It was later brought to light by a senior executive belonging to Sundaram Finance that in the past also small saplings planted have grown into big trees inside the school premises and have provided shade for the students. He added that the students have been encouraged to plant as many saplings as they could inside the school premises.

An awareness campaign yesterday at the Chennai airport took many by surprise. This awareness campaign was organised by Chennai based NGO Save Soil Movement. Many volunteers distributed pamphlets about soil extinction and its consequences etc. As per a volunteer, it was clear that the soil resources have been decreasing at a fast rate not only in the state of TN but also across the world.

To be termed as soil (as per United Nations), it must have atleast 3% of organic matter but soil present in TN has just 0.5% of organic matter. This has been affecting not only agriculture but the nutrients in the foods we consume get depleted also. The health of the people is getting affected by this. Point is that to demonstrate their support for the Save Soil Movement the volunteers were conducting the awareness movement.
