Many people live near Ennore thermal power plant in Chennai. The news that has emerged out is that the kids below the age of 5 are getting affected with respiratory illness or RI now. A study was conducted by the Healthy Energy Initiative (an NGO) in association with PG students of school of Public Health, SRMIST etc.
In the month before the survey was conducted in Ennore, 63% of 207 kids below the age of 5 have been affected with one or more respiratory issues. In the data taken for 2019-21, National Family Health Survey had brought out the prevalence of acute RI symptoms in the kids at 1percent in Chennai and 3.9% in Tiruvallur. According to the press release it was confirmed that RI is present in about 63% of kids under the age of 5.
It is important to mention here that in Arunodhaya Nagar and Kattukuppam RI incidences were higher as all the 13 kids surveyed in Aeunodhaya Nagar had one or more RI symptoms. Thirty two of the total 37 kids surveyed in Kattukuppam had one or more symptoms of RI and that was 92%. Information is that Sivan Padai Veedu Kuppam and AIR Nagar also recorded high presence of RI in the kids. Forty eight percent of kids had running nose issues in them and this was one major symptom of RI. The kids also showed other symptoms like nasal congestion, dry cough and wheezing etc. Reports by the panels set up by NGT were confirmed by the study that was conducted
It must not be forgotten that in 2021 a CPCB-TNPCB joint committee found that the carrying capacity of the Ennore area for particulate or dust pollution was exceeded because of emissions from Tangedos north Chennai Thermal power Station. It is known that Ennore thermal power station was constructed in the year 1970 to serve the purpose of energy generation.
