The Water Resources Department or WRD will soon be launching an app!!
The main aim behind this app launch was to protect the water bodies in Chennai from encroachments and to monitor water quality in Chennai and its periphery. It is learnt that the new app Tamil Nadu Land Use Intelligent Systems or TNLUIS would play a huge role in detecting changes in the land use and also regarding unauthorised construction etc.
The launch of a new app by WRD was announced by Mr. Durai Murugan, minister of water resources in the Assembly during the demands for grants for his department for 2022-2023.
It is noteworthy that the new app would use GIS approach, AI and satellite imaging techniques for identifying changes in the land use. Information is that geo-tagging of land and revenue maps would be done for the system. In Odisha and in Gurgaon similar apps are being used now. Restoration of a long neglected lake in Kolathur and its surplus course would be carried out at an estimated amount of Rs 7.3 crores.
It is worthy to mention that WRD would be building channels to link surplus water from Porur to Ramapuram Lake, Anai Eri in Pallikaranai to the marshland and Thantikal channel to Porur Lake surplus course. There would be widening of the stretch of Adyar River from the confluence point of Chembarambakkam reservoir`s surplus course till Anakaputhur. Other flood mitigation works that would be taken by WRD for Rs 250 crores would be improvements to stretches of Kosasthalaiyar and Porur Lake.
Missing links between water channels and water bodies would be carried out by WRD in Kovalam basin and 4 projects have been devised by WRD at a cost of Rs 184.22 Crores. It is now revealed that a DPR would be commissioned for Chennai water supply augmentation and flood mitigation resilient to climate change.
