Gone are the days when many Chennai residents used to book the LPG cylinders regularly in Chennai. Times have changed and now in Chennai there has been a dip in the LPG cylinders booking. The intense heat and hike in the cooking gas prices have been cited as the important reasons behind the reduction in the LPG cylinder bookings in Chennai.
It was brought to light by a distributor in Chennai that normally in the first half of the month the bookings would be high but now the bookings have reduced. He added that customers who visit the agency complain about the hike in the LPG cylinder rates. Now, a customer would have to shell out Rs 1000 for a single cylinder. It must be noted that Rs 976 is now the price of a 14kg cylinder and it came into effect from 22nd March 2022 onwards. On this day only, the cost of petrol and diesel also increased. As per a resident from T. Nagar, the TN government must not hike the price of LPG cylinder. She added that Rs 20 was given to the cylinder delivery boy and including this amount the total was Rs 976.
Successive governments regarded LPG as an essential commodity and they have provided universal subsidies. This was according to another Chennai distributor. He hinted that profit making was not the objective of the government. It is now said that the price of a domestic LPG cylinder would go up by Rs 260.
It was revealed by a homemaker from Kannagi Nagar in Chennai that she had reduced the number of daily items and shifted to a firewood stove from an LPG cylinder. She then explained that she has been cooking just twice daily and stopped heating the food items and water etc to stretch the gas cylinder from the usual 40 days.
