The summer is on and the heat and humidity in Chennai is almost unbearable now!!
This has led to the hike in the prices of fruits and juices in Chennai. In the month of March, the price of lemon was Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kilo and now it costs Rs 130 per kilo at Koyambedu Wholesale market. In the coming 2 months, the prices would shoot up further. In January, lemons were sold for Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kilo in Chennai market is known.
It must be noted that the market received atleast 3 to 4kgs of lemons from various places in TN and from AP. This was mentioned by Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer at the Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association. He threw light on how the sales would be superb in the summer season and how the prices would increase to Rs 150 per kg in the next 2 months. There has been a huge demand for lemon in the retail shops in Chennai.
Truth is that even during the lockdown and during the subsequent second Coronavirus wave in 2021 the prices have remained high all through the summer. The demand for lemon has always been on the higher side than other fruits and this was as per an owner of a fruit shop in T. Nagar. He added that this huge demand has made the price of lemon to increase from Rs 70 per kg to Rs 140 per kg. Till August, the price of lemons would increase to Rs 170 to Rs 180 per kg.
