Last week GCC locked and sealed a few buildings in Pallavaram and Chrompet in south Chennai and this made sensational news. Now, in north Chennai this lock and seal procedure would be followed by GCC.

The surprising piece of news is that as many as 7000 buildings in Royapuram in north Chennai that were constructed against the building approval plan would be facing action as GCC has started to lock and seal such buildings. For planning permission violations, stop work notices have been issued to more than 1400 under construction buildings in the Royapuram zone. This was according to data belonging to the civic body.

It was brought out by the deputy commissioner of Chennai Corporation D. Sneha that many buildings that were unauthorised were served notices for locking and sealing. As many as 169 buildings have been sealed and notices have been issued to more than 4000 buildings. The owners of 1200 buildings have been issued lock and seal notices by GCC.

To 3500 buildings, de-occupation notices have been issued. In ward 57, the highest number of violations have been issued and this included George Town and nearby places. Point is that in this ward 57 alone as many as 1200 de-occupation notices were issued and 89 buildings have been sealed by the corporation. This was the highest in the 15 GCC zones in Chennai.

In the areas around the Ripon Buildings in ward 54, around 800 de-occupation notices have been issued by the corporation. The action has been taken as per the orders from the High Court of Madras. This was mentioned by an official from GCC. It was revealed by a source that action against illegal buildings would continue and notices are being issued every day. There is a need to study to understand the socio-economic impact of acting against the illegal buildings.
