This has happened to most hotels and homes in Chennai now!!

In less than 2 weeks, the food prices have shot up by 10percent. This has affected both homes as well as hotels in Chennai. Truth is that the traders were also hit badly and they have been facing a dip in their businesses. According to the owner of a grocery store belonging to Villivakkam it was clear that the price of grocery items like oil, rice and dhal have increased by 10percent. As a result, the customers do not have enough money to purchase these items in bulk quantities and this has affected the business badly. From one or two kilos previously, the customers now buy just half a kilo of rice etc.

Out of a total of 500 shops at Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai 300 shops have been shut down now. It was mentioned by Mr. Puniappan secretary of Koyambedu Foods and Wholesale Grain Market that poor sales after the extended lockdown have led to shutting down of many stores.

He shed light on how in the last2 years prices of soaps, shampoos and supplementary diet drinks have risen by 30percent. It must be noted that a small family managed with the budget of Rs 4000 in 2019 and now the family needs Rs 5600. A Homemaker belonging to Chennai highlighted that the cost of pulses, cereals and vegetables etc have become high now. She added that her monthly grocery bill has gone up from Rs 3000 in 2019 to Rs 4400 now. The bitter truth is that while the cost of items has increased the salaries of the earning persons of the families have remained the same.

As per the owner of a Egmore based hotel, the increase in the price of essential items have affected the hotel business badly.  He concluded that atleast 30% to 35% of the business has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
