To mark World Downs Syndrome Awareness Day, a guide book was released about this condition. This book was released by DEIC or district early intervention centre and Institute of Social Paediatrics of Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai. It is important to note that Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal anomaly characterised by extra pairs in chromosome 21 or Trisomy 21 and one in 1000 live births had this Trisomy 21. A person affected by Down Syndrome would have a life expectancy of 50 to 60 years.
The incidence of newborns affected by Down Syndrome increases as the age of the mother increases. Education and proper care would improve the quality of the life of a Down Syndrome affected person. When a woman gets pregnant with her first child at 33 to 35 years of age then antenatal screening for Down Syndrome would be done. Point is that Down Syndrome could be identified in the first trimester. At the DEIC at SMCH, 40 kids with Downs Syndrome were registered and the guidebook would be valuable to the parents. The book would provide information about things that must be done and things that must not be done while handling Down Syndrome kids.
