No more shutting down of eateries, hotels etc in the night in Chennai city!!
Now, many owners of eateries and shops etc are feeling relieved as the High Court of Madras has given order in their favour by taking into account the issues faced by these eatery owners etc.
It is known that many eateries in Chennai city get a lot of customers around midnight. Police normally would force the eateries to close down at the night time. As a result, many owners of the eateries suffered financial constraints and were struggling. The Madras High court has ordered the police department stating that they do not have powers to order the eateries to close down at a certain time.
According to some owners of the eateries and hotels it was clear that they had faced lots of harassment from the police personnel when they were trying to make a living by providing one of the most essential services to the public. They were asked to shut down their eateries etc by 10:30 pm in the late evening by the police.
Mr. M. Ravi, President, Chennai Hotel Association spoke about how the new order from the Madras High Court has brought huge relief and happiness on the faces of many owners of the eateries.
He then threw light on how the order from the State Labour Department stating the eateries, hotels etc to function 24* 7 was not given importance by the police department and they forced the eateries to shut down at a certain time. Truth is that if the eateries do not close down at a certain time then party or nuisance cases were registered against them by the police.
It was brought out by some people belonging to the hotel industry that night shifts have become very common now compared to 10 years ago. Many now would want to enjoy nightlife with their families and friends etc. Police department must consider this.
It was later mentioned by Alwarpet based hotel �Midnight Express� owner Mr. Selvaraj that working people come to the shop at the night time. He added that his hotel gets orders online also around 3am. He was happy that after the order from HC the police personnel have stopped coming to the hotel forcing them to close down. It is noteworthy that during the lockdown many eateries and hotels etc were closed down as per the Covid-19 protocols.
