Posted on: 08/Feb/2022 9:14:02 AM
It is well known that Chennai-Trichy National Highways would be full of traffic as many vehicles use this important road. Now, repair work has been going on one of the 2 Palar bridges at Mamandur and due to this reason the traffic on the Chennai-Trichy NH was affected.

In the years 1955 and in 1984, the 2 Palar bridges were built in Mamandur in Chengalpet. Truth is that the bridge built in 1955 was not able to handle the heavy traffic. Therefore, a new bridge was constructed in 1984. It is important to note that after the first bridge was damaged NH department decided to repair and strengthen it and from Monday onwards traffic was not allowed in the first bridge. The bridge built in 1984 was handling all the traffic here.

Since yesterday morning there has been a heavy flow of traffic and many vehicles were stopped before the bridge. It was later mentioned by some sources that heavy vehicles coming from Chennai were being diverted to a nearby parallel road and vehicles from Trichy were being diverted to Padalam , Nelvai village, Palayaseevaram and Pukuturai village.

Information gathered from the Highways Department sources is that just the heavy vehicles were diverted and light vehicles were allowed to use the bridge. They have also mentioned that the bridge strengthening work would be finished in 20 days. The work on the second bridge would be taken up later on. It was brought out by some regular commuters that crossing of the bridge takes a lot of time.
