On Monday, Chennai residents got shocked when they came to know that a block collapsed in Tiruvottiyur in north Chennai. The news now is that many residents belonging to TN Urban Habitat Development Board Housing Unit on Grama Street in Tiruvottiyur spend the night on the road. These residents were having fears that their tenements would also collapse just like the block that collapsed on Monday.
It was later brought out by a resident that she and her daughter spent the entire night outside fearing about the collapse. She threw light about how all the buildings were constructed at the same time and how other buildings might also collapse just like the one that happened recently.
What was more shocking was that many people in this place did not have the courage (due to the fear of building collapse) to step inside their houses to get their belongings etc.
At present, community halls have been arranged for these residents of damaged buildings of Tiruvottiyur by the officials belonging to that TN Urban Habitat Development Board Housing Unit.
Truth is that many were not interested in going to the community halls because of the lack of privacy for girls and women. Impact was even felt on the neighboring blocks when earthmovers were clearing the debris and trying to demolish the leftovers in the buildings. It was mentioned by the officials that the residents needed counseling to overcome their fears. Point is that the officials have been coordinating with these resents to remove the fear.
