As announced, the newly constructed Chennai International airport became operational on trial basis. Visitors are debarred from entering the airport. The live trial run of the new premises was conducted with the operation of Indigo Airlines’ Singapore-bound flight 6E-053 on Monday. It may be swanky and well lit, but the new international terminal at Chennai airport lacks good toilets. It is understood that there is poor maintenance of the toilets. The taps are leaking and there is water spraying in all directions. The toilets were dirty and the housekeeping staff seemed completely indifferent. Nobody seems to be bothered. The terminal looks great but the sanitation part does not match international standards. Other passengers were upset at the lack of eateries inside the new building. Eyewitnesses said that a few of them begged CISF personnel to step out of the new terminal to get some snacks and water from a small branch of a private restaurant set up near the entrance.
An official of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said it was still not known when full-fledged operations would commence in the new facility.
“We are still grappling with manpower shortage. It is very unlikely the terminal will open by month-end,” the official said.
