For the fresh alignment of the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal double deck road project, a memorandum of understanding or MoU would be signed.

As per the source it was revealed that each stakeholder NHAI, Indian Navy, Chennai Port Trust and TN government have certain obligations that need to be completed, For this reason, MoU is necessary. The settlements along the Cooum need to be removed and residents rehabilitated.

Truth is that the number of people to be shifted has become more now and this was due to the increase in the number of ramps to provide access to the motorists. Currently, there are 13 ramps present. In the past, the cost of relief and rehabilitation was around Rs 500 crores and the amount has gone up now because more lands are needed for the additional ramps.

According to another official it was clear that the tenders for the construction of elevated corridors would be called by the end of the financial year for the 20.5km project.

At present, the containers carrying trailers crowd the Poonamallee High Road leading to traffic congestion and CPT is a project proponent. Point is that the idea was to allow the containers to take the corridors instead of PH Road. The containers carrying trailers reach the Chennai- Bengaluru highway by taking an arterial route in the nights. The official hinted that the DPR for the project would take more than 3 months to be completed. He added that the proposal was to allow the local traffic to use the lower level and heavier trailers to use the second level.

Important piece of information is that the Indian Navy has agreed to provide land space of 1.02hectares for the project. It is learnt that around 60 houses would be demolished and built on another site. This project was started in 2010 and was put on hold in 2012 due to objections over alignment.
