Residents belonging to localities like Mogappair, Nolambur, Ambattur and Vanagaram etc in Chennai have got a reason to worry in the monsoon period!!

If you have travelled through the Cooum River in Maduravoyal located in the western part of Chennai, then you would have witnessed the green water hyacinth that has grown. It is now brought out that the thick layer of water hyacinth with encroachment and garbage would be increasing the risk of flooding in places near to Maduravoyal.

It has been found out by TNIE that this green bed of water hyacinth has taken over around 400 of Cooum River. As all the major SWD outlets have been linked to Cooum River, there would be a possibility of flooding in places such as Mogappair, Ambattur, Nolambur and Vanagaram etc in Chennai. It is well known that these mentioned places got flooded in 2015.

For more than 5 years, de-silting and deepening works were not carried out and this was as per some residents here. Massive encroachment came up near the stretch because of the fact that there has been absence of restoration works. This was according to a resident of Maduravoyal. There are 40 to 50 informal settlements in the area and this was found out by TNIE now. It is shocking to note that tons of garbage gets dumped throughout the stretch. There are some new constructions on the river bund land also.

The river restoration work was supposed to be undertaken by Chennai River Restoration Trust or CRRT but it was not carried out. This was brought to light by professor, Mr. S. Janakarajan, expert in water management and disaster risk reduction. Truth is that the CRRT is turning out to be a burden on the exchequer because the trust has spent crores of money without doing restoration works.
