The Sri Muthukumaraswamy Devasthanam, better known as the Kandaswamy Temple, is getting ready for the Maha Kumbabhishekam that is held here every July. This 400 year old temple is situated near Central Station.

According to legend, Mari Chettiar of Kandapandaram dreamt of Lord Muruga who told him of an idol for him to find that he would have to take to Madras and build a temple to worship. Mari Chettiar did the same and thus the temple came into being.

The moolavar for the Maha Kumbabhishekam, Sri Kandaswamy, is being brought to Chennai from Tiruporur. The idol is two feet tall and has the Lords consorts Valli and Devanai on either side.
