On Tuesday, 20th April 2021, teenager Arjun Kalyan from TN created history!!
The game of chess has become popular these days in India and there are 67 grandmasters from India. Arjun Kalyan became Indias 68th grandmaster and crossed 2500 ELO mark yesterday after scoring a win over Dragon Kosic in the 5th round of the ongoing GM Round Robin Rujna Zore-3. The match took place in Serbia.
Just last week in the previous tournament, Arjun came close to becoming a grand master but lost the match against his opponent. Arjun expressed his thoughts and spoke about how he needed a win in the penultimate round of the event. Unfortunately, he lost the match. Truth is that he did not have any idea about when he would become a grandmaster. He concluded that he let go the monkey from his back by winning the grandmaster very quickly.
For a long time, the 2500 ELO mark had eluded Arjun. It must be noted that in 2019 he was unable to cross the 25000 ELO mark as he lost a match against his opponent. The success finally came this year and he was very happy about that. Not many would be aware of the fact that Arjun learned his chess game from A.L. Kasi at T. Nagar chess academy.
It is worthy to note that Arjun is also coached by IM Saravanan and Ukranian GM Alexander Goloshchapov. Arjun has been able to manage both his studies as well as chess well and he took a break from his sport in January 2020. It was later mentioned by Arjuns dad Mr. Saravana Prakash, hotelier that his son always had hopes of winning the GM title despite missing it previously. Whether it was chess or studies, Arjun always gives his best and this was also brought out by Mr. Saravana Prakash.
