With the unimaginable rise in the number of Covid-19 positive cases, the field level officials have been given instructions by GCC to increase the daily RT-PCR tests from the current 16000 to 25000 per day in Chennai.
On Thursday at the Ripon buildings, Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai corporation commissioner gave instructions to the field level officials. As per an official of GCC it was very clear that at present 15000 to 17000 persons are being tested for Covid-19 infection per day. He threw light on the test positivity rate that has gone up to 15% now in the second wave from the 1%.More samples would be tested per day.
It is learnt that GCC has tested close to 40 lakhs samples ever since the Coronavirus outbreak in March 2020. Point to be noted is that the sanitary inspectors have been asked to trace the contacts of the infected persons at ward levels and take samples from these persons. At the fever clinics in Chennai, GCC also collects samples from those having symptoms. On Wednesday, GCC had tested as many as 17062 samples and on Thursday as many as 15302 samples have been tested by the GCC.
For the purpose of micro managing the preventive measures, the civic body has constituted teams at zonal, unit and ward levels etc. The offices and houses of the infected persons would be disinfected to prevent the infection from spreading. It was pointed out by a statement from the GCC that fines have been collected from field level officers from those who violate Covid-19 norms.
