There is now an imminent possibility of rise in the prices of both veggies and fruits as nearly 2000 retail vegetable and fruit shops are likely to be closed in the largest vegetable market at Koyambedu.

This was mentioned by Mr. Ramesh Kumar, president of Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association.

Truth is that the wholesale vegetables and fruit shops would be functioning at the Koyambedu market and due to this more number of people would be flocking the shops. The decision to close down the shops would lead to nearly 10000 persons without any job.

It was later pointed out by Mr. S.S. Muthukumar, president of Koyambedu Semi-wholesale vegetable traders association that there were 1960 vegetable shops in Koyambedu and hardly 200 shops would function. This would lead to more crowds. Per day, this Koyambedu vegetables and fruit market receives 550 to 600 trucks. A meeting took place between the officials of the Urban and Housing Development Board and it was not fruitful.

As per Mr. Ramesh Kumar, the meeting did not have any positive outcome and an emergency meeting of all the organisations concerned would take place. Truth is that Chennai is recording low prices for vegetables and shutdown of Retail shops would lead to steep increase in the prices.
