Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa will inaugurate thirty one fair price shops in Chennai on Thursday. These shops are meant to sell vegetables at rates that are lower than the outside market prices. These thirty one shops are the first phase in the project that will involve opening similar shops across the State.
The shops will be operated by the Cooperation, Food and Consumer protection Department. 25 shops will be run by TUCS and the rest by Amudam. The shops are aimed at delivering significant savings to consumers, with government agencies sourcing vegetables directly from farmers through co-operative societies and selling them to consumers the very next day, said sources.
