In the next 5 years, the bus fleet of TN would expand by 40percent as the government would be procuring 12000 buses. An amount of Rs 623crores has been sanctioned in the first phase of the project. This amount was sanctioned in the interim budget yesterday. It is said that the TN government would be buying 2200 diesel buses and 500 electric buses. Superb isnt it!!
As per a senior officer belonging to the state transport department, a majority of the e-buses would be for MTC Chennai and the rest would be deployed in Madurai and in Coimbatore cities. An amount of Rs 1580 crores would be the cost for the entire first phase of the project and German Bank KfW has agreed to provide financial assistance up to 203 million Euros.
It must be recalled that TN was the first state in India to sign the Global C40 Clean Bus Declaration to KfW funding. Point is that all the new buses would have BS-VI type engines. By this, the pollution caused would become less. This initiative from the TN government has been applauded by many now.

Information gathered is that to provide adequate services ( as per the ministry of housing and urban affairs standard of 50 buses per lakh population)the urban areas would need 11000 new buses in the next 5 years of time.
