Soon, we might not see the school students with heavy luggage going to their schools in Tamil Nadu

Recently, the school bag policy was released by the Centre. It is now said that the Tamil Nadu government would strictly implement the policy at all the institutions including the private schools etc.

It must be noted that after launching the School Bag 2020 Policy the Ministry of Education had sent a letter to the Tamil Nadu government for its implementation and for its suggestions.

In the year 2012-13, Tamil Nadu government had introduced tri-semester system for the sake of reducing the school students burden of carrying heavy loads of textbooks. Truth is that many schools, mostly the private schools, insist that the students carry heavy bags. This was as per a senior officer.

It was brought out to light by the findings that 48.8% of school heads weighed the school bags of their students. Information gathered is that items like textbooks (contributed a maximum of 3.5kg), notebooks (about 2.5kg) and lunch boxes contributed 1kg and water bottles 1 kg.

All the study material would be available in the classrooms itself and therefore the primary school students need not carry heavy bags hereafter. This was as per an official. He added that Tamil Nadu Government was keen on reducing the bag weight. It is now said that for the middle school students the bag weight would be a maximum of 2.5kgs and for the high and higher secondary students the bag weight would be from 2.5kg to 5kg.

Monitoring committee:

All the districts in Tamil Nadu would have a monitoring committee to keep an eye on the bag weight for the students in the private schools. They would conduct surprise checks in these schools. Important piece of information is that the Tamil Nadu government would keep a check to stop the home works for kids of classes 1 and 2.
