The Coronavirus infection pandemic has resulted in the restrictions now and this would be responsible for the shortage in the supply of the vegetables.
As a result of the shortage, the prices of ten vegetables would increase this week. This was according to some vendors. The increase in the prices of the veggies would be in the range between 10 to 15%. The reason cited was due to the farmers planting lesser crops in the second crop cycle.
There has been lack of labour during the pandemic and this has resulted in the increase in the prices now. For the rest of the month, this trend would be there. This was as per Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Wholesale Market Association.
From the next week onwards, vegetables like brinjal, beans and carrots etc would witness rise in the prices whereas there would not be an exponential increase in the rates of tomatoes, onions etc. It is now said that the vendors are having high hopes of returning back to Koyambedu market.
Truth is conducting markets in places like Thirumazhisai and Madhavaram etc would not be possible in the forthcoming rainy season. It would be dangerous to both vendors as well as the customers.
