On Friday, 24th July 2020, Chennai citys major drinking water source, Veeranam Lake reached its full level. This has brought huge relief on the faces of many now.

It is said that the farmers belonging to tall-end areas are waiting eagerly for its opening for irrigation purposes. Apart from quenching the thirst of Chennai residents, Veeranam Lake has been playing a major role in feeding the crops in around 55,000 hectares in Chidambaram and 20.500 hectares in Kattumannarkoil.

It is known that Veeranam Lake spread over an area of 5000acres also irrigates several tail end parts of delta regions like Bhuvanagiri, Kumaratchi, Parangipettai and Keerapalayam in Cuddalore district. Out of total storage of 47.50 feet, the storage on Friday touched 47.37 feet.

From Vadavar, the inflow into the lake was 365 cusecs to cater to the drinking water needs of Chennai city the discharge was maintained at 59 cusecs. There might not be a drinking water shortage this year in Chennai due to the full capacity in the tank.

As the opening of the Veeranam Lake for irrigation has not started till now, the farmers were anxious as they would not be able to enjoy full benefits of good storage.

It was later revealed by the state secretary of TN Farmers Federation, Mr. P. Ravindran that the officials were keen on taking water to Chennai without supporting the farmers of the region to enjoy full capacity to utilize for irrigation purposes. He highlighted that since the water was not released the tail end areas struggle without water for the crops.
