The Chennai Corporation authorities have asked the traders to shut down their shops for a week from Friday on MKN Road and on the 2 streets Mandi Street and Pudhupettai Street in Alandur in Chennai. The main objective behind this was to break the chain of Coronavirus spread.

It is known that Alandur (zone 12) is among the least affected zones in Chennai and till Friday the number of Covid-19 positive cases was just 555.Theimportant piece of information is the source for about one third of infections in this zone has been due to the visits to the market area. This has been found by the authorities.

Mandi Street and Pudupet Street form the local market area whereas MKN Street extends from St Thomas Mount police station till Maduvankarai bridge which connects with Anna Salai. There are many businesses going here ranging from pulses, food grains to wholesale dealers of steel, plywood etc. The closure was initiated from Thursday itself but the non-cooperation of the traders has resulted in the postponement of the closure of the market. This was as per a zonal staff.

As per a senior officer belonging to Chennai Corporation, the shops were allowed to function on Thursday as it took time to convince the traders. He added that from Friday only banks and ATMs would be allowed to function here. More than 150 Coronavirus cases were from the wards 160 and 161 from the zone. Breaking the chain is very important to contain the spread.

According to a vendor, in Nanganallur also the traders and vendors in the market area in the 4th Main Road have been asked to function on alternative days only. Information is all the street vendors have been asked to move to the lanes and shops on the main road would function on alternate days.
