There are slum board tenements present in Srinivasapuram near the mouth of Adyar estuary in Foreshore Estate in Chennai.

The work on demolition of these slum board tenements and the construction of new ones in the same location would be delayed. This delay has been caused due to more squatters demanding tenements and allowance. The proposal included the building of as many as 2016 new tenements after the demolition of the current 1356 tenements. There was a proposal of an addition of 660 tenements with each flat measuring 400 sq ft.

Each tenement in the present system has ground plus 3 floors but in the new system, there would be ground plus 5 floors. For the sake of funds, the board has approached the union government. The central sanctioning and monitoring committee had scrutinized the proposal. To sanction funds for the project under the Housing for all scheme, the above committee recommended to the centre.

A fortnight back, the board held a public consultation in Srinivasapuram after the union governments nod. Around 2400 encroachers demanded that they must get slum tenement allocation during this public consultation.

The ecological restoration of Adyar River is in its final stage and this was mentioned by a senior official of Chennai River Restoration.

Information is the restoration work cannot be completed as the squatters refused to move out of Srinivasapuram. It was later revealed by another TNSCB official that after the demolition of the existing tenements in Srinivasapuram the board has to pay Rs 7000 per family as an allowance for their stay outside.

Point is the proposal included only those in the existing tenements plus another 660 people in the area. As the number of squatters is more than 2400, the TNSCB might not be able to build tenements for all of them. In this situation, political party cadres have been blamed for instigating people.
