Centre looking to make India key computer hardware manufacturing player

The Indian Government has started taking steps to promote the manufacturing of computer hardware in the country. India is one of the leading sources of software intelligence in the world. The government has taken the first step in ordering any purchase of hardware made by Government agencies to be made only for Indian made hardware.
However, infrastructure is a big problem in India. Where software needs minimal infrastructure, chip makers need reliable electricity and quantities of water, easy access to cheap parts and economies of scale. China is currently the leader in hardware manufacturing.
Says the Head of the US India Business Council in New York Gaurav Verma, ‘Nobody disputes India`s need to build up manufacturing. Not doing so would be fiscally irresponsible… But India`s efforts to force international companies to manufacture in the country are futile. The government needs to not mandate this, but create an ecosystem.’
