Jaya asks for �Centre of Excellence� status for Cancer Institute

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has asked the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to provide �Centre of Excellence� status to the �Cancer Insitute� in Adyar in Chennai. The Institute was established in 1954 by Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy. The institution was established as and continues to be a voluntary charitable organization.
The proposal to bestow the title on the institution has been pending with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for a while now, but no progress has been made. The current Chairperson Dr. Shanta, a Magsaysay Awardee, received the State�s Avvaiyar Award earlier this month for yeoman service.
