On Wednesday, 17th April 2019, roads and railway lines were choked throughout the day. The reason for this was due to the people of Chennai rushing to their native places to cast their votes.
It is well known that 18th April is an important day of general elections and Good Friday falls on 19th April. On Sunday, 21st April is Easter which is one of the important festivals. This has resulted in 5 continuous holidays starting from Wednesday which was Mahavir Jayanthi.
At CMBT in Koyambedu, Chennai, there were lots of people who boarded buses to reach their respective destinations. The important information is almost all the buses operated with total capacity. There were many people who were eager to go to their native places and all the coaches in the long distance trains were filled to capacity at Chennai Egmore railway station, puratchi thalaivar Dr. MGR Central railway station and Tambaram railway station.
Since Tuesday evening, footfall at Chennai metro rail has increased many times. On the arterial roads leading to Vellore, Tindivanam, Puducherry, Tirupathi and at various other places, normal flow of vehicular traffic was affected. It must be noted that since 7 pm on Tuesday in places like Tambaram and Perungalathur normal traffic was affected.
The important information collected is both state government as well as the election commission did not make necessary arrangements to operate additional bus services for the people in the state of TN to cast their votes. The issue that has come to light now is all private bus operators and all omni bus operators where seen fleecing passengers. On Wednesday, the ticket prices were hiked by 50 to 80 percent.
As per Madras High Court Advocate, Mr. V.S. Suresh, hiking of the ticket prices is wrong. He hinted about the absence of specific law to fix ticket rates for omni buses etc. The point to be noted is the government has got power to fix the ticket rates in omni and private buses but they failed to do their duty. This has made the private bus operators to hike the fares in an illegal manner now.
