Central Square construction to kick start in May

By May this year, it is likely that works to construct Central Square will be on. This may take about 4 years to get completed. Upon completion, this shall allow the commuters in getting a beautiful view of the heritage structure from the Central Square. There will be air-conditioned lounge before they pass through the long subway for reaching the central railway station.

Contract to construct a multi-level underground parking is already confirmed at the end of Chennai Metro Rail Limited. This will be a foundation to the 20-storey Central Plaza that is planned at estimated cost of Rs 400 crore. This shall serve as seamless multimodal transportation.

To start with, the preliminary works to construct underground parking have already begun. Upon co pelting this, bus bays and many other commuter amenities shall be constructed. The very first work for the central plaza will be to construct the underground parking slot. Area close to Poonamallee High Road are earmarked to construct the plaza and underground parking. In another 2 years, works to construct parking lot will be over and full swing construction will begin.

In this 3-level underground parking, it shall get linked with the metro station and Chennai central railway station. It will have overall 800 car parking facility. All metro rail commuters, suburban and MRTS train commuters and central railway commuters can make use of this space.

There are going to be bays for outstation buses and city buses here. And lounges for passengers will be there and bus crew for relaxation. Most of the entire space comprising of 20 floors shall be rented as office space and for other types of commercial establishments. Along the road side along Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry, most of the works will be done. the roads are restored and shall not get distributed by any means, say officials.

Areas close to the plaza and in the front side of Ripon building and Moore Market Complex shall get landscaped and have shrubs and lawns and benches for people to take a stroll and walk through. There are 2 large pedestrian subways to connect Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Central railway station and flower bazar. Construction of these subways belong to the construction of the square. Metro officials say they aim at making optimum utility of the available space. As a move to avoid traffic and have seamless traffic flow, we are aiming to construct underground parking lots and subways.
