Those residing at narrow city lanes, it is no longer going to be a necessity for you to reach out to the main road for fetching water from tanker lorries.

On Monday, metrowater kick-started functioning of 90 mini water tankers that have 3,000 litres capacity each. These shall take water supply to the houses at their doorsteps.

According to a senior Metrowater official, the water board is currently providing water supply to the people with the help of water tankers of 16,000 litres, 9,000 litres and 6,000 litres. These tankers take the water until main roads. Hence, for residents from narrow streets and sub-streets of main roads, it is tough to reach out to the tankers and carry water all the way back home. So, for avoiding the inconvenience, smaller vehicles having 2 tanks are set to get operational by the metrowater.

These will easily pass through the narrow roads and provide water supply at doorsteps.

There is not much resale value for 6000 litre capacity tanker lorries, say officials. This is the reason for many of the tanker operators to switch to larger vehicles having more capacity.

This is why metrowater contractors do not show interest in getting 6000 litre capacity tankers. Furthermore, there are practical difficulties in operating 2 tanks each with 3000 litre capacity, say officials. With the supply of water through smaller vehicles, it will be easier for the public to get water supply on time. And the bigger lorries will be assigned to give out water supply to apartments and others lying on main roads where the requirement is about 9000 litres.

As of now, for narrow roads, there are just 20 small vehicles carrying 2 tanks each, say officials. To increase the total count of such small tankers, time may be required until month end. By then, at least 75 such vehicles can be introduced.

There is increase in demand for water supply day by day as the rats are lesser when compared to private operators.

The charge for 6000 litre of water is Rs 475 and for 9000 litres, it is Rs 700. Usually there are about 18-20 trips of water supply carried out by the metrowater contractors every day. There is substantial increase in demand, say officials.
