Free Wi-Fi facility in 100 libraries in Chennai and Thiruvallur Districts - students to benefit

The task of setting up free Wi-Fi facility in all full-time branch libraries has been commenced.

A decision was taken on behalf of the Tamil Nadu State Government to set up wireless, High-speed, Wi-Fi facility in 100 libraries located in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Coimbatore.

A contract was signed with the Internet Service providing company ACT in the presence of the Minister for School Education, K. A. Sengottaiyan during last September at the Chief Secretariat.

As per this agreement, the company ACT will provide the high-speed Wi-Fi facility in all the libraries located in the 4 districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Coimbatore through the company�s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Funds,

Once this facility is introduced, the readers and students visiting the 100 libraries can avail and enjoy the free, wireless, hi-speed Wi-Fi facility. The readers and the students can avail this facility within a 50 metre surrounding to avail this facility. The students can access the internet through their laptops or smartphones and access the much-needed information from the e-books, e-analytical reports, and other useful websites.

The District Centre Librarian, Mandhiram, shared that there are around 173 libraries in Kanchipuram district including branch libraries, sub-rural libraries, and part-time libraries, Out of this, the free Wi-Fi facility is to be set up in 13 libraries for the benefit of the students and the readers.

It is worth noting that this facility has already been set up in Tambaram and has been hugely popular with the visitors. To modernize the district central libraries and make them �smart� libraries, a fund of Rs. 50000 has been allocated by the state government.

Free Examination coaching classes are being organised for the students on behalf of the District Central Library. Further, new buildings are to be constructed for the libraries at a cost of Rs. 3.5 Crores.
