The motorists in Chennai are having a tough time over the lack of transparency about the collection of tax amount at the toll plazas. They were also angry about the poor maintenance of Chennai bypass road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai. At this point of time the news that has come out is TNRDC or Tamil Nadu Road Development Company would begin constructing 4 toll plazas at the outer ring road or ORR between Minjur and Vandalur in Chennai.

It is now said that with the inclusion of these 4 upcoming toll plazas the total number of tollgate in Chennai and suburban places would touch 16. The information gathered is 60. 5km stretch would link Vandalur on the NH-45 with Minjur on the Thiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetty or TPP road via Nazartpet NH-4, Nemilichery NH-205, Padiyanallur NH-5. It was pointed out that  TNRDC would set up as many as 4 tollgates at Varadarajapuram (6km) near Mudichur, Kollapanchery (21.8km)near Nemilichery, Palavedu (30.85km) near Red Hills and Chinnamullaivoyal (56.7km) located 4km from Minjur. In accordance with the National Highways Fees (Determination of Rates and Collection)Rules 2008, the state government has sanctioned approval to TNRDC to set up tollgate is known.

There is heavy traffic congestion in Chennai northern suburbs and the 6 lane access controlled road would ease this traffic congestion and the motorcycle owners have to pay a toll fee for every 15 km distance. It must be noted that the tollgate at Perungudi on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai and 2 toll plazas on Chennai bypass collect above Rs 20 lakhs per day as toll fee. The issue is about the lack of transparency in the toll fee amount.

Mr. R. Sukumar, Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation or TNLOF president, spoke about how TNRDC must put a display board about the toll collection on monthly basis on the ORR. It must not be forgotten that in 2014, 29.65 km road between Vandalur and Nemilichery got completed and thrown open for public use. It is said that 98 percent of phase-2 works were finished and by March 2019 the road would be opened. An amount of Rs 2156 crores has been used in execution of the project.
