The Central cabinet ministry has approved the proposal for 10% reservation for the economically backward section of the society.
A decision was taken in the central cabinet ministers meeting presided by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted today in Delhi to propose a change in the amendment of the related Act.
The Reservation features in the Indian Constitutional Law Sections 15 and 16. The reservations are allotted for the historically known backward society on the basis of caste, religion, colour, and gender. This reservation is applied in the government departments of education and job opportunities.
Until now, the reservation was based on caste and gender. Now, for the 1st time ever, the central government has taken a decision to allot reservations for the economically backward society. Under this proposal, people of all castes/sectors will benefit. The central government views this as a chance for those who are categorised high caste but economically backward will benefit from this.
In this situation, it is necessary to carry out the amendments in the related constitutional Laws in Sections 15 and 16. Subsequently, the petition carrying the proposed amendments must be presented to the Parliament to get approval from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The parliamentary winter session has been for 2 days especially for this purpose.
Only a few months are left for the next parliamentary elections. The BJP government has taken the above stand at this juncture. However, even if the petition for amendment of related Acts is approved by both houses, still there is a possibility that this proposal may get rejected if the opposition in the state governments takes a stand against the proposal.
