Monorail project gets a push

As a move to revive monorail project, the route covering Velachery and Vandalur is soon to be studied by the housing and urban development department. The alignment of the stretch for the upcoming elevated corridor between Chennai airport and Chengalpet is being studied. This initiative is taken after a hold was imposed by the government a few months ago.
Department sources say that the alignment in this line will be tested where the monorail will get interconnected with the elevated corridor.
There will be an interface between the monorail corridor and elevated corridor at Tambaram. The consultants shall identify the same.
This project is studied in 2 routes which are Kathipara to Poonamallee, and Velachery to Vandalur back in the year 2012. The stretch between Kathipara and Poonamallee that is about 20km, and the one between Vandalur and Velachery covering 22km were approved by the Union Urban affairs ministry. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 3,135.63 crore. Under public private partnership, the route between Poonamallee and Kathipara route having a link with Porur and Vadapalani was explored at a cost of Rs 3,267 crore.
According to sources, the entire route covering Velachery and Vandalur that passes via Medavakkam and Pallikaranai shall be studied.
