Works begin for new bridge near Kalpakkam

A 4-lane bridge close to Kalpakkam along ECR towards Puducherry is constructed and the needed works have just started. With this, the 44 years old bridge of 55.5m length that got hit during the floods in 2015 at Illaiyanarkuppam will get replaced.

The old bridge of 3-span dates back to 1974. It had pre-cast square piles of which one of the piers got sunk during the monsoon in 2015. To take a quick measure, all the vehicles were diverted to take the Kalpakkam town route, and construction was causeway was carried out. Starting from March 2016, the traffic was yet again allowed.

In another 18 months, the construction shall get completed. The total project worth is Rs 23.78 crore. For a detailed report about the project, a sum of Rs 22 lakh is sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government, and they have also approved to carry out the construction work.

As this is going to be a 4-lane bridge, it is likely to be wider as compared to the old one. Hence, additional traffic can be allowed.

The damage caused by the monsoon had hit the foundation. So rather than retrofitting trials, all new bridge shall be constructed this time. Now, a deeper foundation shall be constructed so as to aid the bridge in withstanding any kind of tidal action and water force, says an official from the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company that has the control over the toll.

Amidst these, as per the Bharatmala Programme, the possibilities of expanding the 50-km stretch between Chennai and Mamallapuram, and from here to Puducherry (called the NH 332A) is being studied by the National Highways Authority of India.
