Posted on: 28/Sep/2018 5:14:36 PM
This year, the Government of India celebrates 125th birth anniversary of Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952), one of the preeminent spiritual figures of modern times, through a series of public talks in cities around the country. Author of the best-selling spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, ParamahansaYoganandahas introduced millions of readers to the perennial wisdom of the East.

Born in Gorakhpur, India, in 1893, he was sent to America in his 28th year by his Guru. There he spentmore than 30 years sharing his comprehensive teachings on the science of Kriya Yoga meditation, the underlying unity of all true religions, the art of balanced health and well-being in body, mind, and soul till his passing in 1952.He is now widely recognized as the Father of Yoga in the West.

Yoganandas life story, Autobiography of a Yogi, was published in 1946 (and significantly expanded by him in subsequent editions). A perennial best seller, the book has been in continuous publication since it first appeared and has been translated into 50 languages, including 14 Indian languages, andis regarded as a modern spiritual classic. The Autobiography of a Yogiwas the only book that Steve Jobs had on his IPad, which he re-read periodically every year. Steve Jobs also instructed that each attendee at his memorial service be given a copy of this book.

The sacred science of Kriya Yoga consists of advanced techniques of meditation whose devoted practice leads to realization of God and liberation of the soul from all forms of bondage. It is the royal or supreme technique of Yoga, divine union.

In India, ParamahansaYoganandafounded YogodaSatsanga Society of India (YSS) in 1917 and Self-Realization Fellowship(SRF) in 1920 in USA, to carry on his spiritual and charitable legacy worldwide.Yoganandajis teachings and the meditation techniques he taught (including Kriya yoga) are available today through: YogodaSatsanga Lessons, a comprehensive home-study series originated by Yoganandaji himself, available through YSS, and programs conducted by YSS sanyasis all over the country.Through the YogodaSatsanga Lessons, it is not necessary for one to attend classes or have instructors; the sincere seeker can learn and practice these techniques at home, at ones own time.

YSS, which celebrated its centenary last year, was then honored with a postage stamp released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its stalwart service disseminating YoganandajisKriya Yoga ideals. Its main ashram in Ranchi, Jharkhand, houses the monastic order Yoganandaji formed, and was also the site of his first how-to-live school. YSS also has ashrams in Dakshineswar (Kolkata), Noida and Dwarahat (Almora) and over 200 meditation centers around the country.YSS runs various schools, colleges and free dispensaries around the country and also conducts medical camps for the underprivileged section of society.Swami ChidanandaGiri is the current president and spiritual head of YSS/SRF.

In Chennai, Government of India and YSS are hosting a public talk on October 6th, from 5.30pm to 8pm, titled Master your destiny through Kriya Yoga meditation at Chinmaya Heritage Center, 2, 13th Avenue, Harrington Road, Chennai 600031.
