Don`t be surprised if you come across battery run three wheelers in your neighbourhood. It is now revealed that these battery powered three wheelers would be collecting garbage from door to door in the cities in Tamil Nadu.  By the month of December, the government would procure as many as 1694 battery run three wheelers including 100 for the places in Greater Chennai Corporation limits. This would be as a part of Rs 654 crores Swachh Bharat Misison initiative.

These three wheelers would have rechargeable batteries plus multiple bins for different types of trashes. The three wheelers would be eco-friendly plus help in water segregation and saves time by collecting the wastes faster. The sanitation workers could get dignity of labour and by eliminating direct contact with the garbage the job of these workers would be made more hygienic. The city of Chennai would receive 100 such three wheelers and it would cost Rs 2lakh each. The civic bodies in the state of TN currently utilize tricycle and these new three wheelers would replace these tricycles.

An official spoke about how this would benefit the sanitary workers greatly and how these workers would ensure of waste getting segregated. Mr. G. Prakash, municipal administration commissioner, spoke about getting rid of heaps of trashes in cities like Chennai by this method. Regulation of waste management is possible.

It is now brought out that the workers need not touch the waste. The collection of waste would be speeded up by the vehicles. As a result of this the conservancy workers who are covering 150 households now in a day would be able to cover 1200 households in a day soon. To encourage the conservancy workers including the contract workers to work more efficiently, cash incentives would be given to them. According to Mr. G. Prakash, every worker would be able to earn atleast Rs 7500 by selling bottles, covers etc.

A sanitation worker expressed his thoughts and spoke about how these new three wheelers could create layoffs especially for the women workers. He also spoke about how it would be fantastic if the technology improves the output and the quality of the lives of the workers.
