Don’t be surprised when you come across traffic policemen with new masks over their faces in Chennai. The latest news is on Tuesday, 22nd May 2018, police commissioner of Chennai city, Mr. Viswanathan, became cynosure of many eyes when he issued pollution protection masks to the traffic police. The traffic policemen were also taught few things about the health hazards due to pollution and traffic police personnel from all the divisions attended. It is important to note that the temperature in Chennai city is on the rise. The pollution in Chennai is very high and is a never ending one. Though many efforts are taken to control this pollution it still creates many health issues. Hence the new masks were issued to the police personnel.
Earlier surgical masks were used by these traffic policemen and they were of no use. These new masks issued would filter chemicals from entering the respiratory system.
The shocking piece of information is traffic policemen inhale smoke every day on duty and that is 30 times more dangerous than the cigarettes. This was confirmed by Dr. Prasanna Kumar Thomas a leading pulmonary specialist.
When compared to the older surgical masks the efficiency of the new masks are tremendous. It is important to wash the filter present in these new masks daily. Later the filters could be fitted to the frame and could be used again.
According to joint commissioner of police traffic south, Mr. R. Sudhakar, this new initiative would be of great use for all the traffic police personnel at various traffic junctions prone to lung disorders.
