14 members of the governing council passed the agenda to reduce the term days for MBBS course from 270 days to 240 days. It was also resolved to reduce the compulsory attendance for students from 90% to 85%.

This would mean that a student, who was mandated to attend 243 days in 2012, will have to attend only 204 academic days in 2013.

Governing council member said, "We decided to reduce the mandatory attendance as most colleges and universities in other states have around 200 working days,"

Last year, then vice-chancellor Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan had made it mandatory for students to have 90% attendance to write their examinations as he felt it would be difficult for them to cope with the vast syllabus if they absented more. That is, for 270 term days, students were allowed to skip only 30 days.
