Located in northern part of Chennai Stanley Medical College or SMC is highly popular medical college that produces many doctors every year. The SMC Hospital is the talk of the town now. It is now said that the doctors were involved in TN state`s first double hand transplant on Wednesday 7th February 2018.

It is worthy to note that the donor who donated his arms was Mr Venkatesan who worked as contract worker in the famous Indian Oil Corporation or IOC. It is now revealed that this 37 year old Venkatesan fell down in his house and was badly injured. In spite of an emergency operation done by the neurosurgeons Mr Venkatesan did not recover and he was declared brain dead on Wednesday.

It must be noted that his family agreed to donate his organs and also his hands so that others would be benefitted by that.

Dr Ponnambala Namasivayam dean of SMC spoke about how the hand transplant surgery would go on for a time period of eight hours and how the recipient would receive both hands in this transplant.

In the past many surgeries were done in this SMC where severed hands were re-attached to the person concerned. This surgery is totally different from other surgeries as pair of hands was got from another person.

It is now brought out by a senior surgeon belonging to transplant team that the person receiving new hands would need physiotherapy for long duration of time to help him cope with the new hands.

The doctor also spoke about how the body of the recipient might reject a new body part and he threw light on how the immune suppressing drug could lead to many serious complications.

This double hand transplant operation is being carried out under the state health insurance scheme and it covers up to Rs 2 lakhs and corpus fund would take care of additional cost.
