Chennai to Madurai Duronto is functional beyond 25 years, RTI

When you book a flight in advance, the pricing will be more or less the same as 3rd class AC train ticket. Thinking of the high fare, passengers may opt for Chennai-Madurai Duronto to enjoy a comfortable journey. This however is not so.
The train has old coaches though. In fact, a few of these coaches are functional for more than 25 years which is the utmost period of operation. Well, why are all these said? It is an answer to question raised by RTI.
Plea for details by Kolathur resident
A resident of Kolathur had sought for train details under Right to Information act on observing the poor condition of the train. Though denied at first, after his first appeal, he could get the details.
Beyond 25 years
All the coaches were manufactured between years 1992 and 1999, the reply states. Well, the maximum lifespan of train coaches is 25 years after which they will be moved on to scrap. Al these coaches were manufactured by Integral Coaches Factory.
Accidents over years
The train had met with a number of accidents over years. And hence, it is tagged as unsafe and production was ceased this year. The production is thus shifted to modern Linke Hofmann busch coaches.
Apart from enhanced interiors, there are other safety specifications added to the anti-climbing feature. This largely reduces casualties at times of derailment.
