Tomatoes which were selling at a low price at Koyambedu Market have gone up and are now selling at Rs 15 per kilo. Tamil Nadu ranks the 9th place in tomatoes growth. Andhra and Karnataka States fulfil the needs of tomatoes demand in Tamil Nadu.
Tomatoes supply to Koyambedu market depends on the harvest, rains and draught of Andhra and Karnataka states. The rates are determined based on the supply of tomatoes.
During the last three months, the tomatoes were selling as low as Rs 5 per kilo at Koyambedu market. In the retail markets, the tomatoes were sold lesser than Rs 10 per kilo.
Since there was heavy harvest during the month of June, the prices had come down. The prices started rising from the month of September and is now being sold at Rs 15 per kilo at Koyambedu market. In the retail markets like Zam Bazaar, tomatoes were sold for Rs 25 per kilo.
M Thiagarajan who is the president of Koyambedu Market Tomatoes merchants association said: Last month we received 82 loads of tomatoes. As per yesterday statistics we have received only 60 loads. Since the harvest season is over in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, there is short supply. Because of this prices have started are going up. Since there rain and winter season are approaching, the prices will be high till December. Prices will come down from the month of January.
