With an aim of demonstrating that there can be apealing aesthetics with communication, BSNL, mobile network service provider has got plans to install 50 zero base towers that are better in look as well as functions compared to conventional ones.

Zero site

A zero site is multi-functional and it can act as Wi-Fi hotspot, camera, street light and in fact radio units can be kept hidden within this pole or underneath. In India, the skyline gets scattered due to the presence of several towers. We are looking for towers with multiple functionalities that can also work as Wi-Fi hotspot, serve as light emission tower, camera plus tower, and so on, says the Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, Anupam Shrivastava.

He added that during his visit to Mobile World Congress, equipment makers like Nokia, Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, etc gave out several solutions to these issues. We will receive quotes from all these players for zero base towers. To start with, we will install 50 such towers to demmonstrate the ways in which communication can have excellent aesthetics and good looking features, said Shrivastava.

As compared to normal towers, the cost will be higher, however as the active infrastructure can be shared among other operators, the cost can also be distributed ammong them and this can on the whole help have a better looking city.

All the ugly looking towers can very soon be replaced. These are presently spoiling the skyline, he added. The companies will submit their quotes by end of March and in the following 6 months, BSNL will come up with a concept to make these installations. The cost of setting up a tower will range between Rs 8 and 10 lakh.
