All mobile phones to have regional languages soon

Posted on: 16/Feb/2016 5:39:46 PM
The Department of Telecom (DoT) has said that it will make it mandatory for mobile phones to support Hindi and at least one regional language. It said that it will come up with regulations relating to this in about 3 or 4 months. The move will help users communicate in local languages and access government services through mobile phones.

Speaking about this, a DoT official said, Three months down the line, there will be a regulation that will make every mobile phone sold in India mandatory to have English, Hindi and one regional language. To make Digital India a success, broadband cannot be limited to English-speaking middle and upper class Indians and it needs to go down to rural areas.

There are mobiles phones available in the market that support regional languages. The government runs a programme called DISHA or Digital Saksharta Abhiyan that imparts IT training for digital literacy.
